Errr, no... more like she just became a mistress... hrm, maybe that doesn't quite resolve things...
Think more academic... less erotic

Does this involve a ring (either of the "promise" or "engagement" variety), or does this mean that something was just made more official?

Isn't a mistress usually unofficial? Although I think in France and Italy it might be a legal category along with wife and concubine.

I think you are right (about the France part).
So, is it that you just graduated or finished some academic certificate? (making the assumption that "thatperson" is the woman being discussed).
I have no idea what your age is, so pardon me if I'm making you sound much younger (or older) than you are.

Yeah, I finally defended by M.A. thesis. So I guess that makes me a mistress.... or perhaps an aspiring doctress.

Well I must say, congratulations. ;D I always knew that Pat had high expectations, but to go through writing a thesis so you can be his mistress... wow. What's the degree in? I'm working on an M.S., but I think I'm going to avoid the thesis route because it looks too time consuming (I work full time already).

If you only knew what Patrick gave me in return you'd understand why I did it... I'm studying European/French history but the degree is just a formality along the way. Writing the thesis turned out to be a horrible process at times, so I understand why you wouldn't want to do one!
