Actually, this was from the little known waffen-SS volunteer division "die Affin Verwustungen" (roughly "havoc wrecking monkey")
Recruitment began in February of 1941 among fascist sympathizers at the Paris zoo. Some 2,500 volunteers eventually joined the unit, including a group of 500 from the former imperial colony of german south west africa. (now namibia)
Being a waffen ss division they received some of the best equipment available, and were much better equiped than wermacht units of similar size. Indeed, Himmler requisitioned more than 4,500 firearms for the unit, including nearly 1000 machine pistols. Upon hearing of this, Hitler was said to have remarked, "Himmler mir zum narren halten", roughly "Himmler's making a monkey out of me". The unit did not see action on the eastern front (the monkeys were thought to be more succeptible to the cold weather on the steppe) and remained in garrison duty in southern france, until finally disbanded in January 1944.
